As you have probably heard,  Microsoft has just announced Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022.  Here are the possible impacts on your business.

These new operating systems will be released at the end of 2021 and are primarily designed for enhancing Windows overall security and making it safer when connected and using the Internet.  These new Operating Systems will force the use of security technologies that have been available since 2013 but were sometimes seldom used by PC manufacturers and most users.  These security technologies will help reduce the ability of malware(ransomware and virus) infecting your business.

This means that if your PC’s or Server do not support these security technologies,  Windows 11 or Windows Server 2022 will not be able to be installed on your devices.  Windows 10 will be supported till 2025 at which time it will have reached its End of Life (EOL).

From a Filopto perspective there is no impact.  In our test of Filopto 10 and its next version on Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022,  Filopto works perfectly without issues.  If anything, we did notice a slightly faster response time from Filopto.

Some of the key requirements your PCs will need to be upgradable to Windows 11 are:

  • Your device must use a UEFI BIOS motherboard

  • You require a TPM version 2.0 chip in your device.  Many newer AMD and Intel CPUs have already integrated this chip in their CPU.  You may only need to manually activate it in your device via a UEFI Bios settings. To oversimplify what the TPM does,  is to say that it permits key core elements of the operating system to be encrypted and unable to be manipulated by malware.  It also offers speed enhancement when doing encryption type activities.

  • You must activate the Secure Boot option in your Device. This option is available on most modern motherboards and helps protect against ransomware type activities.

  • Have a Graphics card: Compatible with DirectX 12 or later, with a WDDM 2.0 driver.

Note that Microsoft has stated that there might be additional requirements over time for updates, and to enable specific features within the operating system.

We already have some more advance security features in Windows 10 that can be activated by the users once TPM and secure boot are activated.  We expect that some new security tools and enhancements will be offered by Microsoft in the near to mid future of Windows 11.

We recommend that if you intend to upgrade to Windows 11 you start reviewing the current status of your devices and where possible activate these security features now, if not already activated, or plan to replace the devices that are not upgradable.

Also, as a final note, in our testing of these new operating systems we have found that some peripheral devices ( i.e. older webcams and older printers)  had drivers issues that made them non-workable in Windows 11. You may want to verify that all your devices will work properly or plan to replace or upgrade them at the appropriate time.
